The story of Mary, the mother of Jesus, is a testament to how God often chooses the unexpected to fulfil His purpose. As a young woman from the modest town of Nazareth, she was entrusted with one of the most critical tasks in human history: bearing and raising the Son of God.
Mary’s example is one of faith, humility, and reflective thinking, offering vital lessons for us as young Christadelphian adults.
Luke introduces Mary as a virgin, betrothed to Joseph, living in the small, often despised town of Nazareth in Galilee. It was in this unremarkable setting that the angel Gabriel, sent from the presence of God, appeared to her with an extraordinary message: “Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women” (Luke 1:28).
The choice of Mary, a young woman from a humble background, illustrates a profound truth: God’s criteria are not based on social status, wealth, or human expectations. Instead, He values faith, humility, and a heart willing to serve. This should resonate with us as young people today, as we can often feel overlooked or insignificant.
God works through those who are faithful in the small things to accomplish His greatest plans.
When Gabriel announced that Mary would conceive and bear the Son of God, her response was a mixture of wonder and faith. Her question, “How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?” (Luke 1:34), was not one of doubt but of practical curiosity. Unlike Sarah, who laughed at the idea of bearing a child in her old age, Mary believed the angel’s words and sought understanding.
Her faith culminated in her response:
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” (Luke 1:38).
Despite the social stigma she would face as an unwed mother and the uncertainty of what lay ahead, Mary’s trust in God was unwavering. She willingly aligned her life with His purpose, a challenge we today should take to heart.

Faith often calls us to step into the unknown, trusting God’s plans over our own.
Mary’s character is revealed not only through her faith but also through her reflective nature. Luke records that Mary “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). This contemplative habit is seen throughout her life, as she carefully considered the events surrounding Jesus’ birth and ministry, storing them in her heart for deeper reflection.
This reflective spirit stands in stark contrast to the fast-paced, distraction-filled lives many of us lead today. Mary’s example invites us to slow down, meditate on God’s Word, and thoughtfully consider His work in our lives. By taking time to reflect, we can better align our thoughts and actions with His purpose.
Mary’s song of praise (Luke 1:46–55), is a rich tapestry of scriptural references. It echoes the prayer of Hannah in 1 Samuel 2 and draws from Psalms and the Prophets. This spontaneous outpouring of worship reveals a mind steeped in God’s Word, shaped by years of study and meditation.
For us as young Christadelphian adults, this underscores the importance of immersing ourselves in Scripture. The more we fill our hearts with God’s Word, the more naturally it will shape our thoughts, actions, and responses to life’s challenges.
Mary’s life offers several timeless lessons for us as young people:
God Values Faith Over Circumstances
Mary was not chosen because of her social status or accomplishments but because of her faith and willingness to serve. In a world that often emphasises external achievements, her story reminds us that God looks at the heart.
Faith Requires Action
Mary’s acceptance of God’s plan wasn’t passive. She embraced her role, despite the challenges, and trusted God’s guidance. Similarly, our faith today calls us to active participation in God’s work, even when it disrupts our plans.
Cultivate a Reflective Mindset
Mary’s habit of pondering and meditating on God’s work is a practice we can adopt. In an age of constant noise and distractions, setting aside time for quiet reflection on God’s Word can deepen our faith and understanding.
Immerse Yourself in Scripture
Mary’s knowledge of the Scriptures allowed her to connect her experiences to God’s promises. As young Christadelphian adults, building a foundation in God’s Word equips us to navigate life’s uncertainties with confidence and wisdom.
Mary’s life was not free of hardship. From the stigma of her pregnancy to the pain of witnessing her son’s crucifixion, she faced trials that could have broken her spirit. Yet, her faith, rooted in God’s promises, carried her through. She stands as a wonderful model for us today, showing that a life of faith, humility, and thoughtful reflection is both possible and rewarding.
As we consider Mary’s example, let us be inspired to embrace God’s calling, no matter how unexpected or challenging it may seem. Like Mary, we too can say, “Behold the servant of the Lord; be it unto me according to Thy word,” trusting that His plans for us are far greater than we can imagine.
